SCIENCE OF THE MONTH: AUGUST 2014


1 August 2014: Marine biologists have discovered a jellyfish lake in Gujarat, called Arambada Lake probably the first such in India.It was discovered by a team of researchers from the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) led by BC Choudhury, during a routine field visit to a small town named Armabada in Gujarat. There are a peculiar kind of jellyfishes known as 'upside down jellyfish' (Cassiopea sp.) as they swim upside down unlike others. The jellyfishes position themselves on their bottom side to receive maximum sunlight as they harbour photosynthetic algae called Zooxanthellae, which have a symbiotic relationship with jellyfish similar to corals. According to experts, the big bloom of jellyfish in the lake might be attributed to low predation. Jellyfish are found through out coastal India but are seen rarely in lakes. 2 August 2014: India’s first multi-sensor moored observatory IndARC was successfully deployed in Arctic roughly halfway between North Pole and Norway. IndARC will provide an increased understanding of the response of the Arctic to climatic variabilities and their influence on the Indian Monsoon system. Designed and developed by scientists from the  National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), the observatory has been deployed in the Kongsfjorden fjord of the Arctic, roughly halfway between Norway and the North Pole. It was deployed from the Norwegian Polar Institute’s research vessel R V Lance. The Kongsfjorden is considered as a natural laboratory for studying the Arctic climate variability, as it receives varying climatic signals from the Arcitc/ Atlantic in the course of an annual seasonal cycle. 3 August 2014: Ten years ago, on August 3, 2004, NASA's MESSENGER ((MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) spacecraft blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, for a risky mission that would take the small satellite dangerously close to Mercury's surface, paving the way for an ambitious study of the planet closest to the Sun. The spacecraft traveled 7.9 billion kilometers,  a journey that included 15 trips around the Sun and flybys of Earth once, Venus twice, and Mercury three times, before it was inserted into orbit around its target planet in 2011. MESSENGER is only the second spacecraft sent to Mercury. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of its launch, the MESSENGER team has released a movie acquired during an early stage of it's low-altitude campaign. 4 August 2014: Each time we eat chicken, we could be consuming a cocktail of antibiotics, as per the study released by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The study found antibiotic residues in 40% of chicken samples bought from outlets in Delhi and NCR. While the amount of antibiotics found in each sample was not very high, experts said regular consumers of such meat could be in danger of developing antibiotic resistance. In other words, eating chicken with drug traces over a period of time could make you immune to important antibiotics prescribed to treat common illnesses. The study provides strong evidence for large scale and reckless use of antibiotics by poultry owners, which can also lead to antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains in the chicken itself. 22.9% of the 70 samples it collected contained residues of one antibiotic while 17.1% had more than one.Link: http://www.cseindia.org

5 August 2014: NASA's rover Curiosity, the most advanced roving laboratory on Mars, has celebrated its second anniversary on the Red planet. The unmanned spacecraft landed inside the Gale Crater on August 5, 2012 to start a multi-year mission to seek out areas where life could or may once have existed. During its first year of operations, Curiosity fulfilled its major goal of determining if Mars ever offered environmental conditions favourable for microbial life. During its second year, Curiosity has been driving towards long-term destinations on lower slopes of Mount Sharp. Those destinations are in an area beginning about 3 km southwest of the rover's current location. Curiosity carries duplicate main computers. 6 August, 2014: After a decade-long journey chasing its target, European Space Agency's Rosetta has today become the first spacecraft to rendezvous with a comet. Rosetta has been travelling towards the destination for about ten years and five months, looping around the Sun five times and clocking up 6.4 billion kilometres. It is currently just 100 km from the comet's surface. The duckling shaped comet, formally named 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko after its two Russian discoverers, now lies 405 million kilometres from Earth, rushing towards the inner Solar System at nearly 55,000 kilometres per hour. Over the next six weeks, it will describe two triangular-shaped trajectories in front of the comet, first at a distance of 100 km and then at 50 km. Eventually, Rosetta will attempt a close circular orbit at 30 km and, while it will scrutinize for a target site for its Philae lander. Link: http://sci.esa.int/rosetta

7 August, 2014: An effective vaccine against the deadly Ebola vaccine will not be available before 2015. British pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline is planning to start clinical trials of the most promising vaccine next month. According to World Health Organization, there is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola but a candidate is being rushed through the trial process to become available by 2015. Currently there is no registered medicine or vaccine against the virus, but there are several experimental options under development. The world's top medical ethicists will decide whether an experimental treatment for Ebola can be used on patients infected in the outbreak in West Africa. A treatment made by Mapp Biopharmaceutical called Zmapp shown promising results on monkeys and may have been effective in treating two recently infected. Link: http://www.gsk.com

8 August, 2014:
The vast mangrove forest in the Sunderbans is fast losing its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases, from the atmosphere due to rise in the salinity of water, rampant deforestation and pollution, a study has found. The stored carbon in the plants is known as "Blue Carbons". The mangroves grow on fresh water, but because of lack of fresh water the height of mangroves has come down substantially, reducing its capacity to absorb carbons. Owing to deposition of silt at the confluence of the Vidyadhari and Matla rivers, fresh water is unable to enter the Matla river, giving rise to its salinity. The other reasons are shrimp farming, mushrooming of brick kiln industry and deforestation which together have added to the reduced growth of Byne mangroves. 9 August, 2014: The search engine Google has created an interactive doodle to celebrate the Perseid Meteor Shower that occurs every August. The spectacular annual celestial phenomenon began today and is expected to finish by 13th while reaching its peak on 12th. It is a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point from which they appear to come, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. The name derives in part from the word Perseides, a term found in Greek mythology referring to the sons of Perseus. The stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud that stretches along the orbit of the comet. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 133-year orbit. 10 August, 2014: Formerly conjoined twins Carl and Clarence Aguirre celebrated the 10th anniversary of their separation today with the medical team that successfully separated and cared for them at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) - the first documented set of twins to undergo a successfully staged separation of craniopagus twins in the world. One in two and a half million live births are craniopagus, twins joined at the head, and when Carl and Clarence arrived at Montefiore from the Philippines in September 2003, they were already dying from complications of their condition. Their delicate separation surgeries, which began in October of 2013 and were performed in four stages over a period of 10 months, represented a new approach to an especially devastating medical condition. 11 August, 2014: The man who discovered DNA fingerprinting has won the world's oldest science prize, Royal Society's Copley Medal. In 1984, Prof Sir Alec Jeffreys discovered a method of showing the variation between individuals' DNA, a technique which he developed and became known as genetic fingerprinting. He made the discovery in his lab at the University of Leicester after looking at an X-ray image of the DNA of the different members of his lab technician's family. It was a discovery that went on to transform forensic science and resolve questions of identity and kinship. He received the medal "for his pioneering work on variation and mutation in the human genome". The Copley Medal was first awarded by the Royal Society in 1731, 170 years before the first Nobel Prize. It is awarded for outstanding achievements in scientific research and has been awarded to eminent scientists such as Charles Darwin, Michael Faraday, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. 12 August, 2014: Today was the 95th birth anniversary of Indian physicist Dr Vikram Sarabhai. Dr Vikram Sarabhai who is considered the Father of Indian space program, was born on 12th August 1919 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He matriculated from the Gujarat College
and later moved to England and joined University of Cambridge. After returning from Cambridge to an independent India, he founded the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad on November 11, 1947. He was the co-founder of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, is named in his memory. It was from here that the first rocket was launched on November 21, 1963. Dr Sarabhai started a project which resulted in the launch of the first Indian satellite Aryabhata in 1975 from a Russian Cosmodrome. Dr Sarabhai who was awarded Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, passed away on 31st December 1971 while in Kerala. Link: http://www.isro.org

13 August, 2014: The country's first floating solar power panel will come up on a waterbody beside the Eco Park at at Rajarghat of Kolkata by November. The 15KW solar power generating panel would be set up on a water body located beside Eco Park in New Town. The project will be implemented under central funding by the Arka Ignou College of Renewable Energy. The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will also set up a canal-top solar power panel on a link-up canal flowing near Eco Park early next year that will generate 500KW solar power every day. The canal-top solar panel will be the state's first, followed by only a few other states like Gujarat. The canal-top solar project, which is a part of the Union ministry of new and renewable energy's Solar City programme, was prepared by the solar cell of the Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology (formerly known as BESU), Shibpur. 14 August, 2014: Researchers have just come one step closer to understanding the mysterious ways of the domestic cat (Felis catus). The cat genome has finally been fully sequenced, with promise to shed light on cat enigmas ranging from disease to evolution. It was
a female Abyssinian cat ('Cinnamon' which lives at the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA) that was used for sequenceing. The cat genome had been sequenced in bits and pieces previously with 'low-coverage shotgun genome sequencing'. But this effort is the real deal, revealing some 21,865 protein-coding genes. Domestic cats enjoy an extensive veterinary medical surveillance which has described nearly 250 genetic diseases analogous to human disorders. Feline infectious agents offer powerful natural models of deadly human diseases, which include feline immunodeficiency virus, feline sarcoma virus and feline leukemia virus. 15 August, 2014: Almost 1.65 million people across the world die due to heart problems brought on by excess intake of salt, as per a new research analysing populations from 187 countries. The average consumption of salt across the globe was 3.95gm per day, nearly double the 2gm recommended by the World Health Organization. A recent study by the Indian Council for Medical Research, found that the mean salt intake in urban India was 7.6g per day, much higher than the global mean. The study found that four out of five global deaths attributable to higher than recommended sodium intakes occurred in middle- and low-income countries. The 1.65 million deaths meant that nearly one in 10 of all deaths from cardiovascular causes worldwide was due to higher salt ingestion. 16 August, 2014: Today marked the 20th anniversary of the ‘IBM Simon’, the world's very first smartphone, when it first went on sale. The phone was developed by computer firm IBM and the American cellular company BelSelf. It was called Simon because it was simple and could do almost anything you wanted. With its green LCD screen, it had a stylus with touch screen technology. Software allowed users to write notes, draw, update their calendar and contacts and send and receive faxes, as well as allowing calls. Though it weighed half a kilogram, it was the first device that combined the attributes of PDAs, (Personal Digital Assistants) the favourite of businessmen, with mobile phone technology. It had all the components of a smartphone, including a slot in the bottom to insert different applications, such as spreadsheets and thus really a forerunner to the iPhone. 17 August, 2014: An Indian-origin graduate student has discovered and measured one of the most elusive and mysterious objects in the Universe, a middling-sized black hole. University of Maryland astronomy graduate student Dheeraj Pasham and two colleagues made the measurements of the rare black hole which they found hiding in the well-known galaxy M82, some 12 million light years away from Earth. The reason why this discovery and the measurement are considered so significant is that these intermediate-mass black holes are hard to measure even their existence is sometimes disputed. Little is known about how they form. Some astronomers question whether they behave like other black holes. A black hole is a region in space containing a mass so dense that not even light can escape its gravity. Their findings were published in the journal Nature. Link: http://www.nature.com

18 August, 2014: In 1614 John Napier, a Scottish landowner and theologian with some mathematical training, published Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio, or 'A Description of the Admirable Table of Logarithms'. It introduced a new method for quickly performing complicated calculations. As one logarithm user noted much later, logarithms effectively doubled a mathematician’s useful lifetime. Before that, slide rules were used to perform calculations. Multiplying two numbers, for eg, could be accomplished by a process called prosthaphaeresis. Napier's Logarithms was a method to short-cutting that. Logarithms could also be exploited for calculating square and cube roots. Today’s commonly used base 10 logarithms were introduced in primitive form by Henry Briggs. 19 August 2014: Google is celebrating its 10th anniversary today as a public company. Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. Together they own about 14 percent of its shares but control 56 of the stockholder voting power through supervoting stock. They incorporated Google as a privately held company on September 4, 1998. An initial public offering followed on August 19, 2004.
Since then its value has soared to $391.36 billion, making it one of the world’s largest companies. Its mission statement from the outset was "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". In 2004, Google moved to headquarters in Mountain View, California, nicknamed the Googleplex. In the 10 years since going public, the company has expanded from its traditional search business into areas as diverse as healthcare and wearable tech such as Google Glass. 20 August, 2014: Scientists have created the world's first technology that can connect battery-free devices to Wi-Fi. University of Washington says a world will soon become a reality where your wristwatch or other wearable device will communicate directly with your online profiles, storing information about your daily activities where you can best access it - all without requiring batteries. Or maybe battery-free sensors embedded around your home could track minute-by-minute temperature changes and send that information to your thermostat to help conserve energy. The University engineers have designed a new communication system called Wi-Fi backscatter which is the first technology that can connect battery-free devices to Wi-Fi infrastructure. It uses radio frequency signals as a power source and reuses existing Wi-Fi infrastructure to provide Internet connectivity to these devices. 21 August, 2014: In about 34 days, India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) Mangalyaan will be hiding behind the Red Planet and not be visible from earth. So far it has traveled a total distance of 602 million km in its heliocentric arc towards Mars, says ISRO. It is currently 189 million km away from Earth. Round trip radio signals communicating with MOM take 20 minutes and 47 seconds. Mangalyaan will be into the orbit around Mars on September 24, 2014. The spacecraft is travelling at a speed of 22km/second. The challenge is how the speed could be reduced drastically to 1.6km/second. India will be the first country to taste success on its maiden mission to the Red Planet if this attempt succeeds. Five other countries, the US, Russia, Europe, Japan and China have tried their luck with Mars but have not succeeded in the first attempt. Russia took 10 attempts, while the US managed success after 6, China and Japan are still trying. In fact, only 21 of the 51 missions to Mars have been successful. Link: http://www.isro.org
       
22 August, 2014: Kerala has been awarded second position for the National Award for Devolution of Powers to the Three-tier Panchayati Raj System under the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Sashastikaran Abhiyan (RGPSA) for the years 2013 and 2014. The Union Ministry of Panchayat Raj, RGPSA division announced the award amounting to Rs 1 crore each for five states, namely Maharashtra (first), Kerala (second), Karnataka (third), Andhra Pradesh (fourth) and Arunachal Pradesh (fifth). The award is in tune with the commitment to the masses to fulfil former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's dream to hand over power to the people to for self-governance and speedy development.

23 August, 2014: A new study has found that arrival of modern humans in Europe happened much before than previously thought. Previous estimates have indicated that modern humans arrived in Neanderthal-dominated Europe about 40,000 years ago, and that some Neanderthals remained in the continent until just 32,000 years ago. The modern humans overlapped with Neanderthals for a long time period. This overlapping claim bolsters a theory that the two species met, bred and possibly exchanged or copied vital tool-making techniques. Neanderthals are found to be the closest known extinct relatives of human beings, with about 99.5% of DNA in common with humans. They were also likely better adapted to climate of Europe as they had survived several ice ages. On the other hand, modern humans first left Africa roughly 60,000 years ago, headed eastward and reached Europe from Africa. The study is published in the journal Nature.Link:

24 August, 2014: Richard Samuel Attenborough, the Oscar-winning British film director died at the age of 90. Lord Attenborough was one of Britain's leading actors, before becoming a highly successful director. In a career that spanned six decades, he appeared in films including Brighton Rock, World War Two prisoner of war thriller The Great Escape and later in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park. He played the role of a ‘mad scientist’ John Hammond in Jurassic Park. As a director he was perhaps best known for Gandhi, which won him two Oscars. Richard Attenborough was born in Cambridge on August 29, 1923, and won his first acting role at 17 when Noel Coward cast him in a small but decisive role in In Which We Serve. After acting, Attenborough became a notable film director, before pursuing a vast number of positions outside cinema, most notably being chairman of Britain's Channel. 
Richard Attenborough is survived by his wife, their two surviving children, six surviving grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Link: https://www.bafta.org

25 August 2014: Today marks the second anniversary of NASA’s Voyager 1 reaching interstellar space. It also marks the 25th anniversary of Voyager 2’s encounter with Neptune’s moon Triton which took place on August 25, 1989. 
It is still the only spacecraft to have visited the two outer giant planets Uranus and Neptune. The probe is now moving at a velocity of 15.428 km/s relative to the Sun. Like an old film, Voyager’s historic footage of Triton has been “restored” and used to construct the best-ever global colour map of Triton. The map was produced by Paul Schenk, a scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. In 1989, most of the northern hemisphere was in darkness and unseen by Voyager, because of the speed of Voyager and the slow rotation of Triton. Triton might not be a perfect preview of coming attractions, but it serves as a prequel to the cosmic blockbuster expected when NASA’s New Horizons arrives at Pluto next year, which is to happen July 14, 2015. 26 August, 2014: A new study by NASA shows that someone is putting an awful lot of Carbon tetra chloride (
CCl4) into the atmosphere. Back in 1987, the compound was one of many ozone-depleting chemicals regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Worldwide emissions currently run at an average of 39 kilotons per year, approximately 30 percent of peak emissions prior to the international treaty going into effect. Instead of declining at 4 per cent annually since 2007, the CCl4 concentrations in the atmosphere is only falling by 1 per cent per annum, even though reported emissions in that period were zero. The study also discovered that CCl4 remains in the atmosphere 40 per cent longer than was previously believed. The good news is that while CCl4 is rising, it only accounts for 11 per cent of remaining ozone-depleting substances and the overall trend is still downwards, which is good news for southern hemisphere countries affected by the Antarctic ozone hole. 27 August, 2014: A flightless fly from Antarctica has been found to have the smallest insect genome sequenced to date. The wingless midge, Belgica antarctica, lives on the rocky outcrops of the Antarctic peninsula and is the only insect and fully terrestrial animal endemic to the continent. This Antarctic midge can survive high levels of salt, freezing and intense ultraviolet radiation, which are all common to the Antarctic climate. This is the first insect extremophile to be sequenced, which means it is a fantastic foundation for future comparative studies. 
The midge, Belgica antarctica, is the only insect endemic to Antarctica, and thus it offers a powerful model for probing responses to extreme temperatures, freeze tolerance, dehydration, osmotic stress, ultraviolet radiation and other forms of environmental stress. The fly's genome has just 99 million base pairs, compared with 3.2 billion in the human genome. Results from the study are reported in Nature Communications. Link: http://www.nature.com


28 August 2014: Three conservation groups are asking the Fish and Wildlife Service of the United States of America to list the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) as a threatened species. The monarch is the most familiar North American butterfly which belongs to the family Nymphalidae. They are also known as ‘milkweed butterfly’ as they rely upon milkweed for feeding and breeding. 
 Although the Monarch is not an endangered species the annual migration is considered a threatened phenomenon by IUCN. Since there are very few overwintering sites, their populations become vulnerable. These sites are threatened by human activities in Mexico and California. Logging, development, and agriculture are the most serious threats. In order to save these sites the Monarch Project was created in 1984. Although the breeding grounds of the Monarch in the northern regions are not seriously threatened, development, pollution and the use of pesticides might have a negative effect on them. Link: https://courses.cit.cornell.edu


29 August, 2014: The Higgs boson, which provides mass to elementary particles, could also explain the expansion of the Universe in the moments after the Big Bang.The Universe started with a giant explosion known as the Big Bang, and has been expanding ever since. The expansion is balanced such that its shape is flat and not bent, which can only be the case for a very specific distribution of matter density. Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) have shown that the mass of the Higgs boson is very close to a critical value that separates two possible types of Universe - the stable one we know or a potentially unstable alternate. The Big Bang is thought to have created many gravitational waves, which act like ripples in space and time, and it is these waves that are amplified for a Higgs of near-critical mass. 30 August 2014: Today marked the 30th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Discovery which made its maiden take off on August 30, 1984. It flew 39 times over the next 27 years, more than any other shuttle vehicle. 
The spacecraft takes its name from four British ships of exploration named Discovery, primarily HMS Discovery, one of the ships commanded by Captain James Cook during his third and final major voyage from 1776 to 1779.Many space history firsts occurred on board Discovery: it took the first Senator to space in 1985, it took the first Latina to space in 1993 and it flew the oldest man into space, 77-year old John Glenn. Discovery took its last space mission in 2011 and it takes rest at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. And relating to the anniversary news, NASA has publicized their upcoming Space Launch System (SLS). This rocket will be having its debut test flight on November 2018. 31 August 2014: Responding rapidly to the deadly outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa, a team of researchers from the Broad Institute and Harvard University, working with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation and researchers elsewhere, has sequenced the Ebola virus’s genomes. The researchers sequenced 99 Ebola virus genomes collected from 78 Ebola patients in Sierra Leone during the first 24 days of the outbreak. The present outbreak has manifested in more densely populated West Africa. The genomic data also shed new light on how the virus, officially called EBOV, one of five ebolaviruses known to infect humans, has caused at least 12 outbreaks in Central Africa and Gabon since 1976. Until this year, though, it had never been identified in West Africa.The new analysis say that the virus spread, via animal hosts. Researchers aren't sure which animal to blame, but fruit bats they suspect. The finding is reported in Science. Link:

The train Snowpiercer can plow through the snows and avalanches on the train, scoops up snow at the engine, filters and purifies that snow and provides water for the passengers.

It is a huge train and since the entire world is frozen over, it circles the planet over and over and over and over again. The poor and handicapped live in the back. 


Shortly after they boarded their possessions and food were taken away and many died. Now they are provided meager protein bars to survive.

Their children are routinely taken to the front of the train (never to be seen again) and others make that trip, too. At the front of the train the wealthy live a life of opulence and hedonism. 

A man named Curtis has become a kind of leader at the back of the train. He has slowly been organizing those around him to come up with a plan that will lead to revolt so that his people can live.  

For those looking for it, perhaps there is a message about class and treating your fellow humans right. It's just a good story told well. That's better than a lot of what you find in the theaters these days.

American science fiction films have long dominated the genre worldwide because of their big budgets, expansive distribution networks and cultural dominance. Science fiction (SF) literature expert Sonja Fritzsche recognizes this fact, but disputes the notion that the quality of such films begins and ends in Hollywood.


The book provides groundwork for further study of a genre that can be misunderstood or trivialized. It is a literature of the fantastic, a genre that make us look at ourselves from another time period or another planet. The book contains a guide to film viewing. 

Each chapter's author was asked to list five films they would recommend for a beginner to view SF films from a particular country. The critical analysis contains 14 chapters written by experts from around the world, with film traditions presented from Argentina to India to Poland. 

Each chapter includes a brief overview of science fiction history along with in-depth analyses of two or three films from the featured country. The project began as an article commemorating the 50th anniversary of Extrapolation, the first academic journal in the U.S. to publish work on science fiction and fantasy.

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the largest congress in the mathematics community. It is held once every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The ICM of 2010 was held in India (Hyderabad).

Armies of African snails are marching across the State of Kerala, devouring crops, fouling water sources, crawling through houses.
They have come, as usual, along with the monsoon. Heavy infestation has been reported from Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts and pockets in Thiruvananthapuram. 

With the common name, Giant African snail, these are one among the worst invasive species in the world. Giant African snail is known to attack more than 500 plant species, including vegetables, coconut, cocoa, papaya, banana, arecanut, coffee, and even rubber. 

African snail infestation in Kerala was first reported from Palakkad in the 1970s. The typical climatic conditions of Kerala are conducive to the proliferation of the snail. Farmers use wet gunny bags and papaya leaves as bait to collect the snails and then sprinkle common salt, dehydrating it to death.

1 July 2014: CERN and UNESCO are commemorating the signature of the CERN Convention at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris and thereby celebrating 60 years of science for peace. The Convention that led to the establishment of the European Organization for Nuclear Research in 1954 was signed on 1 July 1953 in Paris, under the auspices of UNESCO, by twelve founding Member States. The Convention entered into force on 29 September 1954, the official date of the Laboratory’s foundation. After lengthy negotiations on the details, the Convention was finally approved on 1 July 1953 in Paris. CERN was created with a view to relaunching fundamental research in Europe in the aftermath of the Second World War and 60 years on it has become one of the world’s most successful scientific collaboration. 2 July 2014: Maharashtra got its sixth tiger reserve today with the Ministry of Environment and Forests of India approving the state’s proposal to notify Bor Wildlife Sanctuary in Wardha district as a Tiger Reserve. Bor becomes the sixth tiger reserve in Maharashtra after Tadoba, Melghat, Pench, Nagzira and Sahyadri, and the 47th in the country. National Tiger Conservation Authority declared the 13,812-hectare area of Bor Sanctuary, New Bor Sanctuary and New Bor Extended Wildlife Sanctuary as a core, critical tiger habitat. The sanctuary, an important corridor between Tadoba-Andhari and Pench Tiger Reserves, lies on the boundary of Nagpur and Wardha districts. In order to attain the status of a tiger reserve should maintain a minimum inviolate space of 800-1000 sq km. 3 July 2014: Today is the 25th anniversary of the 'The Great Kapok Tree', the children's book inspired by the murder of the Brazilian environmental activist Chico Mendes, who was assassinated by a rancher in 1988 in Brazil. Mendes’ murder was a significant international incident galvanizing support for environmental activists working to protect the Amazon forest. 'The Great Kapok Tree' was written by Lynne Cherry. It tells the story of a boy entering the Amazon forest to cut firewood and falls asleep. While asleep, the animals 'talk' to him, explaining why forests are so important for our world. While waking up, he considers the animals’ messages, puts down his ax, and decides to no longer cut down trees. 'The Great Kapok Tree' initially received a mixed reception by critics. 4 July 2014:The Bombay Natural History Society-India (BNHS) has tied up with American Alliance of Museums (AAM) to track and study the mammals across selected sites in India, while engaging school children and teachers in generating and documenting the related scientific data. The project called e-Mammal will be implemented under AAM's Museums Connect programme. The other collaborators are North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and Smithsonian Institute, USA and Museo de Paleontologia, Mexico. The e-Mammal project seeks to promote cultural understanding among children through applied scientific research across schools in India, the US and Mexico. As a part of the project, BNHS will select three sites that are representative of India's diverse geography. 5 July 2014: The Japanese Prime Minister is planning to gather all of the world's robots and aim to hold an Olympics where they compete in technical skills in 2020. Of course, 2020 is also the year, Tokyo will be holding the 32nd Summer Olympic Games, so the first-ever Robot Olympics may have some competition. The Prime Minister's comments came at a robotics factory with statements about invigorating the Japanese robotics industry. So plans of combining robotics and athletics might have just been tools of rhetoric. The robotics field booms in Japan, with a recent slew of ground-breaking projects including robot suits and machines that can understand emotion and speech. Prime Minister gave the thumbs up to a bed that transforms into a wheelchair, calling it "easy to use" after trying it out for himself. Considering the world just watched a robotic suit help a paralyzed man kick off the World Cup, it definitely seems like the first Robot Olympics would have an audience. Link: http://jen.jiji.com

6 July 2014: Scientists at the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) have developed a simple and quick method to detect copper in the human body. It uses a chemical sensor that glows in the presence of copper. Added to a sample of blood serum, it helps detect excess copper, by glowing a bright pink. This does away with more lab tests to ascertain copper content which is an indicator of neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Now doctors send blood samples to labs where copper tests are done using expensive equipment involving flame detection and graphite furnace test, that should be done in a well equiped lab. The higher the amount of copper, the brighter the pink, which can be compared using a colourimeteric device. Hence the concentration of toxic copper in the blood stream will be directly related to the intensity of the pink. 7 July 2014: Voyager 1, travelling in a region where no manmade spacecraft has ever been before, registered a 'singing from space' in the otherwise silent surrounding of it and informed mission control back at Earth. Sun goes through periods of increased activity, where it explosively ejects material from its surface, flinging it outward. These events, called Coronal Mass Ejections, generate shock, or pressure, waves. Three such waves have reached Voyager 1 since it entered interstellar space in 2012. Normally, interstellar space is like a quiet lake, but when sun produces a burst, it sends a shock wave outward. It was such a wave that was detected by Voyager. But, now the waves take about a year to reach the Voyager as it is over 19 billion kilometers from the Earth. Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, were launched 16 days apart in 1977. 8 July 2014: In a ground-breaking discovery, scientists have identified the fossilized remains of an extinct giant bird that could be the world's biggest such. Named Pelagornis sandersi, the bird lived 25 to 28 million years ago after the dinosaurs were wiped out but long before the first humans arrived. The creature was an extremely efficient glider, with long slender wings that helped it stay aloft despite its enormous size. The new fossil was first unearthed in 1983 near Charleston, South Carolina. The present discovery was made by researchers at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, North Carolina. With an estimated 20-24-foot wingspan, the creature surpassed size estimates based on wing bones from the previous record holder, a long-extinct bird named Argentavis magnificens. It was twice as big as the Royal Albatross, the largest flying bird today. The findings appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Link: http://www.pnas.org

9 July 2014: Scientists working with human DNA have predicted that the red hair gene, synonymous to UK and Scotland, will soon disappear due to climate change. A gene mutation that yields red hair and pale skin which is more sensitive to light leaves DNA in skill cells more prone to sun damage and cancer. Only 1-2% of the world's population have red hair, though in Scotland 13% of the population are ginger and 40% are thought to carry the gene. Rising temperatures, due to Global Warming will cause it to regress.The reason for red hair is believed to be the lack of enough sunlight to get all the Vitamin D. But if that were true then the cloudier parts of Britain and Ireland, the west, would had the highest percentages. If both parents are carriers of a red hair gene, there is a 25% chance that their offspring will have red hair. This is called recessive inheritance. 10 July 2014: Russia test launched its first new design of space rocket since the Soviet era on Wednesday, Russian news agencies quoted a source at the country's northern Plesetsk cosmodrome as saying. The launch was made possible through the high profile and new generation Angara-1.2PP test rocket. More than two decades in the works, the new generation Angara rockets are a key to Putin's effort to reform a once-pioneering space industry hobbled after years of budget cuts and a brain drain in the 1990s. The rocket is the first entirely designed and built within post-Soviet Russia's borders ordered by then President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s to break dependence on other ex-Soviet republics and a launch pad Russia leases from Kazakhstan. 11 July 2014: US military agency Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) made a global announcement today that its Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program has made, tested and demonstrated the world's first guided bullet of 0.50 caliber type. The guided bullet is much like a guided missile that hits its target irrespective of a bad aim or weather fluctuations has passed the test. For military snipers, acquiring moving targets in unfavorable conditions, such as high winds and dusty terrain commonly found in Afghanistan, is extremely challenging with current technology. It enables snipers to engage targets with better accuracy, since any shot that doesn't hit a target also risks the safety of troops by indicating their presence and potentially exposing their location. 12 July 2014: India has emerged as the world's largest consumer of antibiotics with a 62% increase in popping habits over the last decade. As the world braces for its worst ever threat in the last century, global antibiotic resistance due to unnecessary and unregulated popping of antibiotics, an average Indian has been found to be popping over 11 antibiotic pills a year. India's antibiotic use went up from 8 billion units in 2001 to 12.9 billion units in 2010. The study Global Trends in Antibiotic Consumption, 2000-2010 by scientists from Princeton University has found that worldwide antibiotic use has risen a staggering 36% over those 10 years, with five countries, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), responsible for more than three-quarters of that surge. Among the 16 groups of antibiotics studied, cephalosporins, broad-spectrum penicillins and fluoroquinolones accounted for more than half of that increase. Link: http://www.princeton.edu

13 July 2014: Sun's corona, the vast atmosphere of solar particles that surround our star, is much larger than thought, extending out more than eight million kilometres above the solar surface. The finding has implications for NASA's upcoming Solar Probe Plus mission, due to launch in 2018 and go closer to the Sun than any man-made technology ever has before. Surrounding the Sun is a vast atmosphere of solar particles, through which magnetic fields swarm, solar flares erupt, and gigantic columns of material rise and fall. Now, using NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory and combing it with the measurements from Voyager 1, scientists have found that the corona is even larger than thought. Realizing this extension of the corona has important consequences for NASA's Solar Probe Plus because the mission will travel to within more than 6 million kilometres of the Sun. 14 July 2014: A split-second burst of radio waves has been discovered by scientists using the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico that provides important new evidence of mysterious pulses that appear to come from deep in outer space.The finding by an international team of astronomers marks the first time that a so-called "fast radio burst" has been detected using an instrument other than the Parkes radio telescope in Australia.
The bursts appeared to be coming from beyond the Milky Way galaxy based on measurement of an effect known as 'plasma dispersion. The result was important because it eliminated any doubt that these radio bursts were truly of cosmic origin and the radio waves showed every sign of coming far outside from their galaxy. Scientists, who reported the Arecibo finding confirm previous estimated that these strange cosmic bursts were very rare. The study is published in the Astrophysical Journal. 15 July 2014: NASA has fitted a heavily modified Boeing jet with a 17-tonne telescope and will use it as a flying observatory to study how stars are formed. Officially known as the 'Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy' (SOFIA) is a heavily modified Boeing 747 Special Performance jetliner, with a 17-tonne, 8-foot telescope mounted behind a 16-by-23-foot sliding door that reveals the infrared telescope to the skies. The plane’s ability to fly near the edges of the atmosphere gives it better visibility than ground-based observatories. The Boeing 747SP was designed in the 1970s to fly faster, higher, and farther than other versions of the 747. The plane can stay airborne for over 12 hours and its range is 6,625 nautical miles. It can fly above the troposphere and 99.8 per cent of the water vapour held in atmosphere, which obscures infraredlight.  That gives its on-board infrared telescope a clear view into outer space. 16 July 2014: A previously unrecognised form of soot particle, known as super-aggregates has been identified from wildfire emissions in India, US and Mexico. Scientists led by Rajan Chakrabarty from Nevada's Desert Research Institute detected the soot particle in smoke plumes from wildfires in Northern California, New Mexico, Mexico City, and India. For several decades, scientists have been trying to quantitatively assess the impacts of wildfire soot particles on climate change and human health. However, due to the unpredictability of wildfire occurrences and the extreme difficulty in sampling, accurate knowledge of wildfire-emitted soot properties has eluded the scientific community. Unlike the conventional soot particles emitted from vehicles and cook stoves, super-aggregates are ten times longer and have a more compact shape. 17 July 2014: That's exactly what would happen if you tried to bring the Pelagornis sandersi home, assuming houses and humans existed back then. Scientists have identified the fossils of what could be the largest flying bird ever found. With an estimated 20- to 24-foot wingspan, the extinct Pelagornis sandersi was twice the size of today's biggest flying bird, the royal albatross, according to the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in North Carolina. Researchers believe the Pelagornis sandersi lived about 25 million to 28 million years ago. The avian giant's long, slender wings and paper-thin hollow bones allowed it to stay aloft for long distances without flapping its wings. Pelagornis sandersi may have had to run downhill into a headwind to achieve takeoff, just like a glider would. The remains of the Pelagornis sandersi now rest in the Charleston Museum. 18 July 2014:
India released the 'State of Forest Report' today which recorded an increase of 5,871 sq km in its forest cover in the past two years with West Bengal contributing over 60% of the total rise in green area. Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand and Bihar were the other states which contributed to this marginal increase. Hilly and tribal districts of the country registered an increase in forest cover of 40 sq km and 2,396 sq km, respectively. The northeastern states, which account for one-fourth of the country's forest cover, recorded a net decline of 627 sq km in 2013 compared to the assessment of green cover in 2011. Andhra Pradesh lost the maximum 273 sq km of forest cover whereas Madhya Pradesh lost 178 sq km of green patch in two years. 19 July 2014: Researchers have discovered that water could have flowed on the surface of Mars with the help of salt present in the Martian soil that can melt ice. The findings reveal that Martian salts can help liquid water form but only when the salts touch the ice. Researchers found that the conditions that support salty water on the Red Planet can last for a few hours per day during late spring and early summer at the polar regions of Mars. To understand this, Fischer and team recreated Mars conditions in their lab in metal cylinders. The scientists mimicked temperatures in the late Martian spring and early summer as well as atmospheric pressure. When the scientists placed calcium perchlorate or salty soil directly on ice layer, drops of liquid water formed within minutes, researchers found. 20 July 2014:
The US Department of Energy announced that work has started on what when finished will be the world's largest carbon capture facility. Located in Thompsons, Texas, the project will capture a portion of the emissions from the coal-fired W.A. Parish Generating Station. The CO2 will then be compressed and piped to the West Ranch oil field, where it will be injected under ground. This will help liberate oil that's otherwise difficult to extract, but has the added benefit that the carbon dioxide typically stays underground, sequestered. The project was originally planned as a small pilot that would only extract CO2 from the equivalent of 60 megawatts of the plant's 3,500MW of generating capacity. When it was realized that the amount of CO2 from 60MW of would be too little CO2 to supply the oil field's needs, the project scope was expanded to 240MW. 21 July 2014:
Scientists may have stumbled upon the world's first ever blood test for suicide. Johns Hopkins researchers suggests that changes in a gene involved in the function of the brain's response to stress hormones plays a significant role in turning what might otherwise be an unremarkable reaction to the strain of everyday life into suicidal thoughts and behaviors. They focused on a genetic mutation in a gene known as SKA2. By looking at brain samples from mentally ill and healthy people, the researchers found that in samples from people who had died by suicide, levels of SKA2 were significantly reduced. Some had the DNA modification called methylation which were found high in the study subjects who had killed themselves. 22 July 2014: A scientist from Kerala has discovered three new species of oil-degrading bacteria from industrial waste. R.B. Smitha of the Malabar Botanical Garden in Kozhikode discovered one new species of Pseudomonas and two new species of Burkholderia which are new to science. Burkholderia is widely known as good bio-degraders of toxic and tough compounds. It consists of a number of versatile bacteria that occupy a wide range of ecological niches, having exceptional metabolic versatility. They can be used for bioremediation, a process for removing waste and pollutants from contaminated sites using microbes or other organisms. Malabar Botanical Garden is an institution focusing on the conservation of aquatic and medicinal plants. It comes under the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). 23 July 2014: Today marked the fifteenth anniversary of NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. It was was launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999. Chandra is one of NASA’s current 'Great Observatories', along with the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. It is specially designed for understanding the high-energy processes of the universe through its unrivaled X-ray vision. Originally called the 'Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility', the telescope was first proposed to NASA in 1976. Prior to its launch aboard the shuttle, the observatory was renamed in honor of the late Indian-American Nobel laureate, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, one of the foremost astrophysicists of the 20th century. With its superb sensitivity and resolution, Chandra has observed objects ranging from the closest planets and comets to the most distant known quasars. 24 July 2014: Scientists at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) in Karnal, Haryana have successfully cloned a male calf from the frozen semen of a Murrah bull which died 10 years ago. The calf, which is named Rajat, was born yesterday (July 23). It was made possible through the "hand-guided cloning" technique. The Murrah bull, whose frozen semen was used to produce male calf, had been ranked first in the 5th set of all-India progeny-testing programme. A progeny test is a measure of the male's reproductive and performance value. Cloning helps in faster multiplication of superior germplasm which can be done through producing clones of progeny-tested bulls and by producing high-lactating females. A team of seven scientists, SK Singla, MS Chauhan, RS Manik, P Palta, Shiv Parsad, Anuj Raja and Amol Sahare, was involved in the production of cloned calf.

25 July 2014: The world's first malaria vaccine will be available in the market by next year. Pharma company GSK has submitted a regulatory application to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its malaria vaccine candidate, RTS,S. It will be exclusively for use against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. Around 90% of estimated deaths from malaria occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and 77% of these are children under the age of 5. Data from the phase III vaccine trial programme conducted at 13 African research centres in eight African countries (Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania) including over 16,000 infants and young children have also been included to support the filing. Results from a large-scale trials showed that children aged 5-17 months at first vaccination with RTS,S experienced 46% fewer cases of clinical malaria.Link: http://www.malariavaccine.org

26 July 2014: Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to climb seven highest peaks in seven continents in under eight months. Baig, 23, accompanied her mother, has completed climbing seven of the highest mountains around the world, including Mount Everest. Baig finally climbed the highest mountain in Europe, Mt Elbrus in Russia, bringing their 'Seven Summits' adventure to an end. Samina Baig also became the first Pakistani woman to climb to the top of that highest peak in North America. In March, Mirza Ali reached the top of the Mount Carstensz Pyramid, the highest peak in Indonesia. In the last six months, Mt Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, Mt Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, and then the Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. 27 July 2014: The Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) is all set to host a thematic Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre which will provide access to forest-related research data from institutions across the country. The primary objective of the ENVIS Centre is to collect research data on the forest-related subjects and tie-up with various research institutions besides creating a databank. Conservation and management of Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) had gained a lot of importance in India, which is rich in biodiversity. A website, being developed as part of this project, will be commissioned shortly. It would offer information on wetlands and wildlife besides other aspects of trees and forestry. It would be part of a network that included 68 centres located in research institutes across the country. It would provide information on the best crops for their agro-climate. 28 July 2014: The number of bird species listed as Critically Endangered (CE) has reached 173 bird in the country as per the latest International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Birds for 2013. The latest species to join the growing list of birds facing the danger is Woolly-necked Stork, Andaman Teal, Andaman Green Pigeon, Ashy-headed Green Pigeon, Red-headed Falcon, Himalayan Griffon, Bearded Vulture and Yunnan Nuthatch. Earlier in 2013, five species had been added to the threatened list, which includes Great Stone Plover, Alexandrine Parakeet, Grey-headed Parakeet, Blossom-headed Parakeet and Red-breasted Parakeet. Critically Endangered list of threatened species released by IUCN is that database which provides information about species which are facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Among the total of 10,425 species in the 2014 Red List, 140 species are extinct, 4 extinct in the wild, 213 critically endangered, 419 endangered and 741 vulnerable.Link: http://www.iucnredlist.org
 

29 July 2014: An Ariane 5 ES heavy rocket lifted off from South America today, bearing 'Georges Lemaitre', Europe's fifth and final robot supply ship for the International Space Station (ISS). 'Lemaitre' is an 'Automated Transfer Vehicle' (ATV) which is named after Georges Lemaitre, the Belgian astrophysicist who proposed the Big Bang theory of how the Universe came into being. 'Georges Lemaitre' with a payload of more than 20 tonnes, is the biggest in ESA's history. After being placed in orbit, the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is scheduled to navigate its way to the ISS by starlight and dock with it on August 12 at a height of about 400 kilometres above the Earth. 'Georges Lemaitre' carries nearly 6.6 tonnes of fuel, water, oxygen, food, clothes and scientific experiments. 30 July 2014: Cassini celebrates a decade today in the Saturn system. It has been a decade since a robotic traveler from Earth first soared over rings of ice and fired its engine to fall forever into the embrace of Saturn. The Cassini spacecraft, carrying the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, arrived in the Saturn system on June 30, 2004, for a four-year primary mission. Cassini's top accomplishments and discoveries include, the Huygens probe makes first landing on a moon in the outer solar system (Titan), discovery of active, icy plumes on the Saturnian moon Enceladus, Saturn's rings revealed as a laboratory for how planets form, Titan revealed as an Earth-like world with rain, rivers, lakes and seas,  studies reveal radio-wave patterns are not tied to Saturn's interior rotation, as previously thought, vertical structures in the rings imaged for the first time, mystery of the dual, bright-dark surface of the moon Iapetus solved.

31 July 2014: A railway bridge which could be the world's tallest is coming up in India. The Northeast Frontier Railway's (NFR) has begun the constructing of the bridge, at Noney in Manipur. The bridge will be raised on pillars having a height of up to 141 metres. From the point of view of pillar height, it will  surpass the existing tallest of Mala-Rijeka viaduct on Belgrade-Bar railway line in Europe where the height of pillars is 139 meters. The proposed bridge in Manipur is part of the Jiribam-Tupul-Imphal railway line to connect the capital of Manipur with the broad gauge network of the country. The alignment of the railway line passes through steep rolling hills of the Patkai region, eastern trail of the Himalayas. However, another railway bridge is coming up on the Chenab in Jammu-Kashmir, having a height of 359 meters. When completed it will be the highest railway bridge in the world.
