SPECIES OF THE MONTH: OCTOBER 2012

INDIA'S CAPITAL BIRD

Phylum: Chordata
Class    : Aves
Order   : Passeriformes
Family : Passeridae
Genus  : Passer
Species: Passer domesticus

The House Sparrow (Passer domesticus), popularly known as Angadikkuruvi in Malayalam has been declared as the “State Bird" of Delhi, the capital of India.. A decline in the house sparrow population across the world has been reported for the past few decades. In India too, the phenomenon is reported, although information is anecdotal and requires further investigation.

The House Sparrow is a bird of the sparrow family Passeridae, found in most parts of the world. One of about 25 species in the genus Passer, the House Sparrow occurs naturally in most of Europe, the Mediterranean region, and much of Asia. Its intentional or accidental introductions to many regions, including parts of Australia, Africa, and the Americas, make it the most widely distributed wild bird.

The House Sparrow is strongly associated with human habitations, and can live in urban or rural settings.Because of its numbers, ubiquity and association with human settlements, the sparrow is culturally prominent. It is extensively, and usually unsuccessfully, persecuted as an agricultural pest. Though it is widespread and abundant, its numbers have declined in some parts of the world. The animal's conservation status is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
